NDC Criticises FG’s Temporary Petrol Price Reduction at NNPC Stations

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount at NNPC retail stations, describing it as “tokenism and deceit.” The party argued that the temporary measure would not adequately address the economic hardship Nigerians have faced since petrol subsidy was removed in May 2023.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party questioned the impact of the policy on Nigerians who have lost jobs, seen businesses collapse or struggled with rising living costs. It also questioned whether NNPC stations could serve the country’s population without causing congestion and safety risks.

The NDC accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of attempting to reintroduce petrol subsidy “through the backdoor.” The Federal Government, however, has said the arrangement is not a return to subsidy, explaining that NNPC Retail will temporarily forgo its petrol profit margin and sell at cost, with priority given to public transport operators.

The party urged Nigerians to support its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other NDC candidates in the January 16, 2027 election. It called for a change in the country’s economic direction, while the government says its measures are intended to cushion the effects of global fuel-price pressures.
