Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to demand better governance and accountability from political leaders, lamenting the country’s poor electricity generation and electoral challenges.
Speaking at the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) dinner on Monday night, Obi compared Nigeria’s electricity situation with that of South Africa, noting that despite generating over 40,000 megawatts of electricity, South Africans still complain about power supply, while Nigerians have remained largely silent despite the country producing about 4,000 megawatts.
“I was in South Africa where they generate over 40,000 megawatts of electricity, yet people are still complaining about power. In Nigeria, we are managing just about 4,000 megawatts and many people are keeping quiet,” Obi said.
The former presidential candidate stressed that Nigerians must begin to speak up and demand improved governance, insisting that the country’s challenges can be addressed through collective action and accountability.
“This is the time for Nigerians to speak up and demand better. What is happening in this country can be changed. Those who refuse to count our votes, we will hold them accountable,” he stated.
Obi also expressed concern over the future of Nigerian children, saying the country must be repositioned to work for all citizens.
“Our children cannot continue like this. This country must work. Nigerians can no longer be taken for granted,” he added.
