The Nigerian Army says it deployed a company of troops to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 to support democratic stability during the country’s election period.
The deployment was carried out on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, according to a statement from Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele. The Army explained that the troops were not involved in conducting the elections.
Instead, they were positioned to provide a stabilizing presence before, during, and after the process. The operation, codenamed Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II, focused on deterring security threats and reinforcing public confidence in the electoral period.
Under the operation, troops conducted patrols, monitored key locations, and maintained a visible security presence in Cotonou and surrounding areas.
The mission ended with the troops providing security support during the inauguration of President Romuald Wadagni.
