A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Joseph Afam Ogbene, has been appointed Deputy Director, Peace and Reconciliation, for Enugu East Senatorial Zone in the party’s campaign council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ogbene, popularly known as Akirikachioku, was named in the list of members of the Enugu State APC Campaign Council released by the party on Tuesday.
The campaign council, chaired by Governor Peter Mbah, comprises 51 directorates and brings together political leaders, former governors, lawmakers, government officials and other party stakeholders.
Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Uchenna Ugwu, and the state APC chairman, Martin Chukwunweike, will serve as vice chairmen of the council.
The party said the structure was designed to promote broad participation across communities and interest groups as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
Ogbene’s appointment comes against the backdrop of his involvement in community leadership and party politics in Enugu State.
He is the Executive Chairman of Umuchigbo Iji-Nike Autonomous Community in Enugu East Local Government Area and has held several leadership positions in community organisations and political structures.
His previous positions include President-General of Umu Nike Progressive Union, a role he held from 2013 to 2022, and President-General of Nike-Uno Cultural Union, Enugu East Local Government Area, a position he held from 2022 to 2026 before securing re-election for a second term.
He also served as general treasurer of Umuchigbo Iji-Nike Autonomous Community from 2020 to 2025 and as the Labour Party chairman in Enugu East Local Government Area from 2023 to 2025.
Ogbene is also the managing director of NENNYFAM Investment Ltd and has been involved in community development, conflict resolution, youth empowerment and the preservation of Igbo cultural heritage.
As a community leader, he has advocated inclusive governance, peaceful coexistence and greater participation of women and young people in decision-making. His community-oriented activities have also included support for widows, youths and vulnerable members of society.
His new role in the APC campaign council places him in a directorate responsible for peace and reconciliation in Enugu East Senatorial Zone as the party begins preparations for the next general elections.
Reacting to the appointment, Dr Ogbene thanked the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu state for the opportunity to serve in the campaign council.
He assured that the committee, especially the Peace and Reconciliation Directorate, will deliver on its mandate to ensure that the governor is re-elected during the 2027 polls.
