Pastor Alexander Idachama has become the first patient to undergo robotic-assisted surgery at Redeemer’s Health Village Hospital in Redemption City, Ogun State, marking a major development in the hospital’s use of advanced surgical technology.
Idachama underwent a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, a procedure performed with the assistance of surgical robotics. The operation was carried out by a team led by Professor Obi Ekwenna-Davis, co-founder of US-based RoboMed Global Inc., alongside Nigerian doctors, including Dr Ifeanyi.
Speaking about his experience, Idachama said the robotic-assisted procedure offered greater surgical precision, significantly reduced pain and had a gentler impact on patients. He also said the treatment saved him the need to travel abroad for medical care.
The development follows the hospital’s first robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgery, which surgeons said could help reduce pain and shorten hospital stays because the technology allows procedures to be performed through smaller incisions, resulting in less tissue damage.
Idachama, who holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and researches electronics, electrical communication and smart-grid applications, said he would recommend Redeemer’s Health Village to friends and family, describing its facilities as comparable to the best in the world.
