The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe, in connection with the murder of 23-year-old nursing student, Miss Vivian Chilaka, in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.
Chilaka was reportedly killed on June 14, 2026, in an incident that sparked widespread concern within the community and beyond.
The police said Ibekwe was arrested on September 4, 2026, following what it described as credible and actionable information received by the Command.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect allegedly gained access to the building by climbing over the fence with the aid of a ladder, allegedly with the intention of sexually assaulting the deceased.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that a struggle ensued between him and Chilaka, during which he allegedly used a knife to stab her, resulting in her death.
The police also disclosed that the suspect had allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents within the community.
However, the Command stressed that the claims were still being thoroughly investigated and corroborated.
Meanwhile, the police have exonerated the landlord who was earlier suspected in connection with the murder.
The Command urged members of the public to disregard earlier suspicions against the landlord, saying the ongoing investigation had cleared him of involvement in the incident.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigators continue to probe his alleged involvement in other related criminal incidents.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended residents of Alor for their cooperation, patience and support throughout the investigation.
He particularly appreciated community members who provided timely and useful information that helped the police make what they described as a significant breakthrough.
The Commissioner assured the public that the Command would continue to pursue every credible lead and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The Command further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening public confidence in policing and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes do not escape justice.
