Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the alleged obstruction and attack on the convoy of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as he attempted to enter Benue State capital for campaign activities.
Sowore reacted in a statement following videos circulating online showing what appeared to be a confrontation involving Obi’s convoy and individuals described as suspected political thugs.
He alleged that the incident amounted to a state-sponsored blockade and attack, accusing agents of the Benue State Government and the Bola Tinubu administration of involvement.
“I strongly condemn these acts of political brigandage by agents of the state government and the Tinubu regime. This is totally unacceptable,” Sowore said.
He maintained that every presidential candidate should be allowed to campaign freely across the country without intimidation, violence or obstruction.
“No candidate should be prevented through violence, intimidation or state-sponsored thuggery from campaigning freely anywhere in Nigeria,” he added.
Sowore warned that those allegedly responsible for the incident were putting Nigeria’s democratic process at risk and urged them to immediately desist from such actions.
“Those behind these cowardly attacks are toying with fire and threatening the democratic rights of all Nigerians. They must desist immediately before it is too late,” he said.
