The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has commended the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Ewuare II, for his exemplary leadership and influence among traditional rulers in Nigeria, describing the Benin monarch as a model worthy of emulation.

The Sultan made the remarks through the Emir of Kagara in Niger State, Malam Ahmed Garba Gunna, during a royal durbar held in Benin City as part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of Oba Ewuare II’s coronation.

The event brought together traditional rulers from different parts of the country, highlighting the growing significance of the Benin monarch’s reign in promoting cultural heritage, traditional leadership and cooperation among royal institutions.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Sultan praised Oba Ewuare II for the leadership qualities that have earned him respect among his counterparts, expressing admiration for the monarch’s standing within Nigeria’s traditional institution.

“We are following in your footsteps while praying for grace and courage,” the Sultan said, reaffirming the respect he holds for the Benin monarch.

The royal durbar, which was once an uncommon spectacle in Benin, has become a recurring feature under Oba Ewuare II, who ascended the throne a decade ago.

A major highlight of the celebration was the monarch’s horseback procession from his palace to Garrick Memorial Ground, where he led a large gathering of spectators and dignitaries during the royal horse race.

Among the traditional rulers who paid homage were the Imah IV of Somorika Kingdom, HRH Sule Idaiye, and the Ojie of Uneme N’Ekehuan, HRH Oba Felix Collins, both from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.

Responding on behalf of the Benin Palace, the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, expressed appreciation to the Sultan’s delegation and other royal guests for honouring the occasion.

Irabor also recognised the contributions of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Omoregie, and a team of veterinary doctors led by the Director of the UNIBEN Veterinary Clinic, Professor Paul Nwiyi Okechukwu, for ensuring the welfare of the horses and riders ahead of the grand durbar.

Beyond its colourful displays and equestrian activities, the celebration underscored the role of traditional institutions in fostering national cohesion, preserving cultural identity and strengthening relationships across Nigeria’s diverse communities.

The Sultan’s tribute further highlighted the importance of mutual respect and collaboration among traditional rulers as Oba Ewuare II marked a decade on the throne of the Benin Kingdom.
