Former Ekiti State governorship aspirant Isaac Fayose has criticised Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over his comparison of petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Fayose argued that comparing pump prices without considering the difference in wages and living conditions between both countries could give a misleading picture of affordability.
According to him, while petrol may cost more per litre in the UK when converted to naira, British workers generally earn significantly higher wages, making the purchasing power of the average worker an important factor in any comparison.
Fayose also pointed to differences in public services and infrastructure, including healthcare, electricity, roads and security, which he said should be considered alongside fuel prices when comparing the economic realities of both countries.
He therefore challenged the governor’s comparison, arguing that the focus should not be limited to the nominal price of petrol but should also consider how much of an average worker’s income is required to purchase it.
