Aba Union, the apex socio-political and cultural body of the Ukwa la Ngwa people of Abia State, has endorsed Governor Alex Chioma Otti for a second term, declaring him the sole candidate of the bloc ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The resolution was contained in a communique issued at the end of the Union’s general meeting held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in Aba and presided over by the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa, alongside the leadership of the Union headed by Chief Barr. Theo Nkire.
The meeting, which brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, professionals, youth and women groups, diaspora representatives, and other stakeholders, reviewed issues affecting the welfare, unity, and development of Ukwa la Ngwa land and Abia State at large.
Under the theme “Shared Prosperity: Our Role in the Continuous Development of Abia State,” the Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Otti-led administration, citing ongoing infrastructure projects, social services reforms, and economic initiatives across the state.
Members commended the government’s efforts in road construction, hospital upgrades, smart school development, and transport infrastructure, while acknowledging challenges linked to funding constraints and broader economic pressures.
A major highlight of the communique was the Union’s strong political position endorsing Governor Otti for a second term in 2027. The group also called on all Ukwa la Ngwa political actors and aspirants to step down any gubernatorial ambitions in solidarity with the Governor, describing him as a unifying figure and a symbol of effective leadership.
The Union further expressed appreciation to the national leadership of the Labour Party for what it described as recognition of the Governor’s performance and leadership qualities.
The meeting also raised concerns over inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and economic instability affecting residents of Abia State. It urged the government to deepen investments in agriculture, SME development, industrial clusters in Aba, power supply solutions, and digital infrastructure to boost productivity and job creation.
The Union praised ongoing advocacy efforts for the creation of Aba State, commending stakeholders at both national and state levels for their engagement in constitutional review discussions at the National Assembly.
The communique concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in Governor Otti, praising his administration’s reforms in governance, civil service restructuring, education, healthcare, and economic management.
The Union pledged to mobilize full grassroots support across Ukwa la Ngwa communities to ensure his re-election in 2027, describing it as essential for continuity and consolidation of current reforms.
The meeting ended with a reaffirmation of unity, peace, and collective commitment to the development of Abia State.
