Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has come under renewed scrutiny after security agencies reportedly uncovered weapons and ammunition at his residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The discovery was made during an operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Because matters relating to illegal firearms fall outside the EFCC’s jurisdiction, the recovered arms have been transferred to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.
Malami is currently being detained at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja in connection with a separate money-laundering case. Although he was granted bail last week, he has reportedly been unable to satisfy the bail requirements, resulting in his continued detention.
This delay has fueled speculation that the former AGF may be deliberately stalling his release to avoid being taken into custody by the DSS over the arms discovery. Sources claim that DSS operatives are on standby at the Kuje facility and are prepared to arrest him once he secures his freedom.
Malami was granted bail alongside his wife, Asabe Bashir, and his son, Abdulaziz. However, insiders allege that his prolonged stay in custody is strategic, aimed at preventing an immediate re-arrest.
With multiple probes ongoing, Malami is said to be facing possible charges ranging from financial crimes to illegal possession of arms and alleged terrorism financing. The final outcome of these investigations could have far-reaching consequences for both him and members of his family.
