The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it is putting measures in place to independently collate and monitor its votes during the 2027 general elections, citing concerns over past technical problems associated with the electronic transmission of election results.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Abdullahi said the party had learned from its experience during the 2023 elections and would not leave the protection and collation of its votes entirely in the hands of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, candidates and political parties had relied on INEC’s assurances that results would be automatically transmitted to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal during the 2023 election.
He said technical difficulties later affected the transmission process, leaving the party wary of relying solely on the electoral commission in 2027.
“We can no longer trust INEC to protect our votes for us. We are saying that we will vigilantly guard our own votes. We will protect our own votes,” Abdullahi said.
He explained that the ADC was now making arrangements to collate results from polling units independently and compare them with the official figures eventually announced.
The party spokesman stressed that the ADC would accept election results if they accurately reflected the votes cast at polling units but would challenge results that, in its view, did not correspond with the figures recorded at the polling units.
