Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity in the country following reports of kidnapped victims, particularly schoolchildren.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, AY questioned how Nigeria had reached a stage where innocent children could be abducted from their classrooms and their freedom subjected to ransom negotiations.
“How did we get here?” the comedian asked, lamenting a situation where parents send their children to school with hope, only to face the fear of abduction and uncertainty over their safe return.
AY stressed that the primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property, noting that no parent should have to worry about whether their child will return home from school. He also emphasized that teachers should not have to risk being kidnapped simply for carrying out their duties.
The entertainer extended his sympathy to children still being held captive, their families, and communities living under the constant threat of insecurity.
“This is not about politics. This is about humanity,” he stated, adding that the kidnapped children represent dreams, futures, and the hope of Nigeria rather than mere statistics.
AY concluded by urging authorities to take decisive action to address the country’s security challenges, warning against becoming desensitized to recurring tragedies.
“Nigeria must do better,” he said.
