Omoyele Sowore Says Resurfaced MKO Abiola Clips Prove His Longstanding Democratic Activism

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Stephen Sowore, has said recently resurfaced video clips of his interactions with late democracy icon MKO Abiola serve as evidence of his longstanding commitment to the struggle for justice, democracy, and the liberation of Nigeria.

In a statement shared on social media, Sowore said his involvement in the June 12 pro-democracy movement dates back to a time when many of those currently in positions of authority had not yet identified with the cause.

According to him, the clips highlight his role in the fight against military rule and his support for the validation of the June 12 mandate, which was widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history.

Sowore argued that some individuals who either opposed, ignored, or later benefited from the democratic struggle now occupy positions of power and have turned against the ideals they once failed to defend.

He maintained that the resurfaced footage is more than a historical record, describing it as proof of consistency in his advocacy for democratic governance and social justice.

The activist also criticised what he described as attempts to use state institutions to silence dissenting voices, insisting that history has consistently shown that oppression cannot defeat a just cause.

Omoyele Stephen Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of justice, accountability, and democratic freedom, declaring that the struggle for a better Nigeria remains ongoing.
