Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has described the political support expressed for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council as an unusual development in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Soludo made the observation on Wednesday, October 14, in Abuja, where political leaders from different parties gathered for the inauguration of the council ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The governor, who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), said the gathering reflected an unusually broad alignment of political interests around a sitting president, particularly given the participation of politicians from different party backgrounds.
In a report compiled by the Media and Publicity Team of the Forum of Chief Executives of Federal Parastatals (FORCEPA), Soludo’s remarks were highlighted for their focus on cross-party cooperation, economic reforms and the relationship between political leadership and national development.
The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also pointed to the participation of approximately 31 state governors at the gathering, describing it as an indication of the breadth of political support expressed at the event.
However, the participation of political figures from different parties does not necessarily amount to a formal endorsement of Tinubu by every governor or represent the views of all Nigerian voters.
Soludo further discussed the economic policies of the Tinubu administration, describing its approach as pragmatic progressivism.
Drawing on his background as an economist, the Anambra governor argued that the administration had taken difficult policy decisions in response to longstanding structural challenges facing the Nigerian economy.
He maintained that the reforms should be assessed against the economic conditions the country faced before Tinubu assumed office and the administration’s stated objectives of restoring stability and promoting sustainable growth.
Supporters of the government have pointed to its economic policy changes as necessary steps towards addressing structural weaknesses. Critics, however, have questioned the immediate impact of the reforms on household incomes, living costs and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Soludo nevertheless expressed support for the administration’s reform direction, arguing that confronting longstanding economic problems was necessary to establish a foundation for future prosperity.
His appearance at the APC campaign council inauguration also highlighted the evolving relationship between party affiliation and political cooperation, given that he remains a member of APGA rather than the ruling APC.
According to FORCEPA’s Media and Publicity Team, Soludo’s intervention brought economic policy and institutional performance into the broader discussion surrounding the 2027 presidential election.
The forum also emphasised the importance of public institutions in implementing government policies, documenting development programmes and providing Nigerians with accurate information on public-sector performance.
