Fresh political developments in Oyo State have raised questions about Governor Seyi Makinde’s political future, following reports of resignations by some of his appointees and aides ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akelicious gathered that shifting political interests, internal disagreements and uncertainty over the governor’s next political moves may be contributing to the departures, amid growing speculation about the future direction of his political camp.

Among the prominent figures linked to the unfolding developments are former Chief of Staff Segun Ogunwuyi and Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, Funmi Arulogun, whose exits have fuelled discussions about possible political realignments within the governor’s circle.

Although the circumstances surrounding individual departures may differ, sources familiar with the political situation alleged that disagreements over candidate selection, party strategy and the distribution of political influence have contributed to the growing tension.

One source claimed that some political stakeholders within Makinde’s camp were dissatisfied with the process through which a preferred candidate for future political contests was selected.

According to the source, some political advisers and cabinet members had favoured Taofeek Arapaja but were unhappy with the reported decision to support Adekanmbi instead.

The source also alleged that religious considerations featured in the disagreement, with some stakeholders reportedly favouring a Muslim candidate because of Makinde’s Christian background.

“These are some of the issues creating disagreements within the camp. Some of them are not comfortable with his decision to impose his choice on them,” the source alleged.

The claims have not been independently verified, and it remains unclear whether the reported disagreements directly influenced the decisions of the individuals who resigned.

The source further alleged that some of the governor’s associates had begun exploring alternative political options, including holding meetings with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as preparations for the next election cycle intensify.

“Makinde’s second term ends in seven months. His aides are resigning because of political realignment. Some of them are already having nocturnal meetings with APC,” the source claimed.

The reported developments come against the backdrop of changes within the Oyo State Government, including the dissolution of the State Executive Council and the termination of appointments of some political office holders as part of an administrative restructuring exercise.

The restructuring has also generated questions about the governor’s succession plans and the future of the political coalition that supported his administration.

Meanwhile, speculation about Makinde’s political ambitions beyond his current governorship has added another dimension to the unfolding situation. However, claims that he intends to seek the APC presidential ticket remain unverified and should not be treated as an established decision.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the reported departures and disagreements could test the cohesion of Makinde’s political camp and influence negotiations over future party alliances and candidate selection in Oyo State.

Whether the developments will result in a broader political realignment or remain limited to internal disagreements within the administration is yet to be seen.
