Tragedy struck in Orji, near the Flyover in Imo State, on Friday morning after police officers allegedly shot and killed a young man, identified as Igbozuruike Ezenwa, from Akabo in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, operatives of the Imo State Police Command reportedly raided the Orji area as early as 5 a.m., arresting six young men, including Ezenwa.

The reports alleged that Ezenwa jumped out of the police vehicle while he was being transported, prompting the officers to shoot him at close range in the head.

The officers were further accused of abandoning his body at the scene before leaving with the remaining five young men in their custody.

As of the time of filing this report, the Imo State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It also remained unclear whether the deceased was suspected of any criminal activity, the reason for his arrest, or the circumstances that led to the alleged shooting.

The incident has raised concerns about the use of lethal force by security operatives, the treatment of suspects in custody, and the need for accountability when allegations of extrajudicial killings arise.

Under Nigerian law, suspects are entitled to the right to life, dignity and due process. Law enforcement officers are expected to use force only when legally justified and in accordance with the applicable rules governing the use of force.

The allegation that Ezenwa was shot in the head makes an independent investigation particularly important to establish exactly what happened and whether the officers involved acted within the law.

The police are expected to clarify the circumstances of the reported raid, identify the officers involved, explain the status of the five other young men reportedly arrested, and address the allegations surrounding Ezenwa’s death.

Until the police provide an official account and the circumstances are independently established, the allegations remain unverified.

The incident has renewed calls for transparency, accountability and respect for human rights in police operations across Imo State.
