An unusual incident has reportedly left members of All Saints Anglican Church in Awka, Anambra State, in disbelief after a young congregant allegedly disappeared midway through a church renovation project, leaving the building without a roof.
According to reports, the young man approached the church priest and leadership, expressing his desire to renovate the church as a thanksgiving offering to God for answering his prayers and in appreciation of the support he received from the congregation during a difficult period in his life.
He reportedly volunteered to fund the complete replacement of the church’s roof and asked the church to obtain an estimate for the project. He also instructed that carpenters be hired to remove the existing roofing sheets and wooden framework in preparation for the installation of a new roof.
Following his instructions, the old roof and supporting wooden structure were dismantled.
Reports further allege that the man later gathered the removed roofing materials and sold them to a scrap dealer for ₦67,000.
He then allegedly directed the carpenter handling the project to purchase the required roofing sheets and timber, assuring him that payment would be made directly to the suppliers once the materials had been procured.
The carpenter reportedly purchased the materials at a total cost of ₦987,000 before contacting the benefactor for payment. However, the man’s phone number was said to have become unreachable.
When the carpenter alerted the church leadership, they reportedly disclosed that they had also been unable to contact him and did not know his whereabouts.
As of the time of this report, All Saints Anglican Church is reportedly without a roof despite the ongoing rainy season, leaving members of the congregation concerned as they seek a way to complete the abandoned renovation project.
