Atiku Allegedly Picks Amaechi as Running Mate Ahead of 2027 Presidential Election

Atiku and Amaechi

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly picked former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the January 16, 2027, presidential election.

The decision follows weeks of negotiations within the opposition coalition, particularly after disagreements during the presidential primary and the movement of key figures to rival political platforms. Atiku’s choice is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the ADC’s national appeal, pairing a candidate from the North-East with Amaechi from the South-South, creating what political observers describe as an “AA” ticket.

Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor, initially declined interest in the vice-presidential slot but accepted the nomination after appeals from influential political leaders. Atiku assured that Amaechi would play a major role in both the campaign and a possible ADC government.

The former Vice President also used the announcement to criticize the APC-led federal government, alleging attempts to weaken opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 elections and calling on Nigerians to defend democratic freedoms.
