Suspected bandits have attacked a vehicle conveying Nigerian police officers travelling from Sokoto State to Zamfara State for a special duty assignment, killing several personnel.
According to reports, the attack occurred on Monday as the officers made their way to Zamfara for the assignment. The exact number of officers killed in the incident, as well as whether any personnel survived, had yet to be established as of the time of filing this report.
Videos obtained from the scene by witnesses showed the lifeless bodies of some of the officers inside a bus, with their hands and legs appearing to have been tied with ropes. Other images showed personal belongings believed to belong to the officers scattered on the ground, while people gathered around the scene following the attack.
A vehicle reportedly used to transport the personnel was also seen with visible bloodstains, suggesting the extent of the violence.
The incident has further heightened concerns over the persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups commonly referred to as bandits continue to launch deadly attacks on communities, ambush travellers, kill residents and abduct victims for ransom.
