Security has been intensified across Nigeria following intelligence suggesting that suspected terrorists and other non-state actors may be planning coordinated attacks on schools, places of worship, NYSC orientation camps and other public gathering points during the ember months.
The development has prompted the Nigeria Police Force to place its formations, tactical units and specialised teams on heightened alert as the 2026/2027 academic session approaches.
The security directive reportedly ordered Commissioners of Police and other commanders to strengthen surveillance around educational institutions and other identified vulnerable locations, while increasing patrols, stop-and-search operations, access control and rapid-response arrangements.
Police authorities also directed increased monitoring of state borders, entry and exit routes, as well as other strategic corridors considered vulnerable to the movement of armed groups.
The intelligence reportedly indicated the movement of armed elements from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State, while suspected ISWAP operatives and local collaborators were allegedly conducting surveillance of potential targets.
In response, specialised police units, including counter-terrorism personnel, bomb disposal teams and the Police Mobile Force, have been placed on heightened readiness.
Military authorities have also confirmed awareness of the security intelligence, stating that troops are monitoring developments and remain prepared for possible interdiction operations.
Authorities have urged members of the public, particularly school communities, religious organisations and residents around vulnerable locations, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles, movements or abandoned objects to security agencies.
The heightened security comes at a time when schools are preparing to reopen for the new academic session, raising concerns over the need for stronger protection around learning environments and other locations where large numbers of people gather.
